Grimethorpe Primary Care Centre is part of the second phase of a series of developments planned for Barnsley to the value of £13.4 million. The project’s aim is to enhance health and well-being and provide flexible and adaptable facilities in order to meet future changing demands of community-based health and social care and other local services.

Located on land currently owned by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC), which will be sold to Barnsley Community Solutions, the centre will provide General Medical Services from one GP Practice as well as a range of community health services and community information services.

Emphasis has been placed on understanding and integrating local needs and priorities thus ensuring that the Grimethorpe Centre will be successful at catering for the growing needs of patients in this part of Barnsley. In order to achieve this, consultation and engagement with stakeholders throughout all phases of the development process, has been key. The centre will provide improved services as well as flexible and adaptable environments in order to meet future demands on the provision of community-based health and social care.

This second phase is part of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement between Community Solutions for Primary Care (CSPC), Partnerships for Health (PfH), Barnsley Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Barnsley MBC. Barnsley Community solutions will develop and build this facility and lease it to Barnsley PCT and Barnsley MBC for a 25-year term.

Other service and patient benefits that will be gained from the new centre will include:

  • 1001 sq. m. of accommodation space
  • General Medical Services provided by one GP Branch Practice
  • Primary Care services
  • Community Services including facilities for district nurses, health visitors and school health visitors as well as a Community Information Service kiosk
  • Facilities for sessional services including physiotherapy, child and adolescent mental health services, podiatry, speech therapy, family planning and mental health services
  • Expansion space for a further practice

Barnsley Community Solutions will be responsible for the maintenance of external and internal fabric of the facility (Hard FM) and tenants for internal cleaning etc (Soft FM).
