Chalkdene Developments has begun construction work on a development of new family homes in Welwyn Garden City as part of a long-term programme to deliver much-needed housing across Hertfordshire.
The Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, Councillor David Williams, kicked off building work at a ground-breaking ceremony at the Centennial Gate development.
The scheme will consist of 21 two, three and four-bedroom contemporary homes, six of which will be affordable family homes. The development is scheduled to be completed by the Spring of 2021.
The site is the first to be delivered by Chalkdene Developments LLP, which is a 50-50 joint venture created in 2018 between Morgan Sindall Investments and Herts Living Ltd to develop vital new homes across the county on underutilised and surplus sites.
Commenting on the ceremony, Ben Harrop, general manager at Chalkdene Developments, said:
“We’re excited to have broken ground today and start construction on the first of our new residential developments, which marks a major milestone for our partnership. We’re committed to building the development to the highest standards, which will see new contempary, sustainable homes delivered in a prime location, ideal for family living.”
The Centennial Gate development, which will be delivered by building contractors Lovell Partnerships Ltd, has been specifically designed to complement the surrounding area. The new houses have large windows to provide well-lit, comfortable and contemporary living spaces.
Located in the Panshanger area of Welwyn Garden City, the homes will be within easy access of the town centre and a short distance from a number of popular local parks.
On completion, local social housing provider settle group, which has a portfolio of over 9,000 homes across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, will take ownership and management of the development’s affordable homes.

David Williams, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said:
“We’re committed to playing our part in meeting the demand that exists across the county for a variety of types of high-quality new homes, including affordable and shared-ownership housing. District and borough councils have been set ambitious housing targets by Government to address our housing needs over the next 15 years.
“We’re anticipating a number of urban extensions in Hertfordshire and, where we are the landowner, we want to help shape those places. To do this, we formed Herts Living Ltd, which is wholly-owned by Hertfordshire County Council.
“Revenue from the sale of properties will also provide an additional income source for the county council to help us meet the rising costs of and demand for the vital services we provide for Hertfordshire residents.”
